Latest Personal Mobile Phones
Our pick of the market's latest models

In a market that has become increasingly competitive in recent years, mobile phone manufacturers are constantly trying to produce models that will outperform their rivals.  This has meant that it has also become extremely difficult for prospective buyers to choose a phone from the vast range available.  This article will look at some of the latest, feature packed mobile phones from some of the major makes in an attempt to draw some clarity from the confusion.

Far from being the heavy, over sized, featureless brick that constituted the first models of mobile phone, today's handset is a high-tech, sleek fashion statement.  Typical features include a still and video camera, an mp3 playing facility, video calling, the ability to load third party software, an FM radio and removable memory card storage, to name but a few.  Sony Ericsson's latest offering, the W850i is an excellent example of such a phone.  Available in both black and white, coming in at a respectable size of just 98 x 47 x 21 mm and weighing only 116 grams, it squeezes in a multitude of features, including a 2 megapixel camera (with video recording and calling facilities), mp3 player, removable memory card, web browser and email client.  It is the ideal gadget for anyone who wants to avoid the hassle of carrying around a phone, music player and camera - why have three when they're all built into one!

For those looking to focus on their music, the Sony Ericsson W950i is the answer.  Although it does not have a built in camera and is slightly larger than the W850i (106 x 54 x 15 mm), it does have an astounding 4 gigabytes of song storage memory (that's over a week of continuous music) as well as a touch screen.  It also has amazing array of connectivity features: Infra Red, Bluetooth, 3G, USB data transfer - to name but a few.  The W950i also utilises the Symbian mobile operating system, which means that it is possible to choose from thousands of games, applications and utilities and load them onto the phone.

Alternatively, if you're a budding photographer, then why not consider the LG KG920 camera phone.  It features one of the highest quality built-in cameras on the mobile phone market, boasting an astonishing 5 megapixels.  It goes without saying that the lean 18 mm thick package is extremely portable.  This is even more surprising when you consider that it also includes a xenon flash (providing much better night photography than most other mobile cameras), mini SD card slot for easy picture transfer to computer or printer and a crystal clear 256,000 colour screen.  The camera can even rotate to facilitate simple self portraits.  If that isn't enough, the KG920 also features a multi format music player, tri band functionality, web browsing, email collection and Bluetooth connectivity.

If Nokia is your preferred brand of mobile phone then don't worry either.  The Nokia N91 smart phone is yet another multi-faceted handset.  It also includes 4 gigabytes of music memory and supports an immense range of music file formats.  Dedicated buttons on the front of the handset allow for easy music control.  It even comes with headphones that include a clip on the remote control so you can skip tracks without ever having to take the phone out of your pocket.  The N91 is another 3G mobile meaning that it is possible to use the camera to conduct a video call to someone with another 3G handset.  The only disadvantages of the N91 are its weight and size compared to the other models.  At 113 x 55 x 22 mm and 164 grams, it certainly isn't the world's lightest or smallest of phones.  However, it is by no means unmanageable and the plethora of features that the Symbian operating system provides far outweighs the disadvantages of the phone's larger size.

It is important to remember that these are just a few of the models out there in the market and that most of today's phones have comparable features.  It is always best to try to handle any handset before purchasing it - perhaps the hardest and most subjective aspect of choosing a new mobile phone is its physical feel and appearance.
